Sanitary Workers of Chennai Corporation Protest Against Exploitation
Thousands of sanitary workers belonging to the Greater Chennai Corporation had begun an indefinite protest demanding their legitimate rights. A Government Order in 2017 had assured Rs 16,000 and above as the minimum wage but they are not getting even Rs 7,000 because of contractualisation. The strike was called off after two days when the authorities held a conciliation meeting. But the demands have not been met yet. The workers allege that both the central and state governments appreciate and salute the frontline workers but only in words and refuse to solve their livelihood problems.
