MP Bypolls: Voting Percentage Surges in 8 Seats

While the average voting was down by about 3%, it surged in eight constituencies and overall voting recorded is 69.79%.

Bhopal: Despite the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, voter turnout in 28 constituencies in Madhya Pradesh, where bypolls were held on November 3, remained almost the same as that of 2018 Assembly elections. Further, voter turnout increased in eight seats.

The overall voter turnout witnessed a decline of around 3%, according to provisional figures released by the Election Commission of India. The final tally may vary by a percentage or more.

In the 2018 elections, these 28 constituencies had witnessed a voter turnout of 72.93% which decreased to 69.79% in 2020.

Eight Assembly constituencies -- Bhander, Mungaoli, Karera, Pohri, Ashoknagar, Mungaoli, Suwasra, Agar and Biaora – have witnessed a surge of 1% in voter turnout.

Agar constituency reported the highest voter turnout with 83.75%, while the lowest was reported from Gwalior East with only 48.15%. Early trends show that constituencies in Malwa region registered a higher voter turnout compared to those falling in Gwalior and Chambal region.

Five constituencies including Agar, Hatpipalya, Badnawar, Suwasra and Biaora reported over 80% voter turnout, most Assembly seats in Chambal and Gwalior region voted between 50-60%.

The fate of 355 candidates, including 12 ministers were locked in EVMs as voters exercised their franchise on Tuesday, November . The result will be declared on November 10 simultaneously with Bihar election results.

As per reports, extra precautions were adopted amid the pandemic. However, in Gwalior and Chambal, violations of COVID-19 guidelines were reported.

Meanwhile, while thanking the voters, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the Congress’s questions regarding EVM demonstrates that the party has accepted their defeat.

On the other hand, former CM Kamal Nath also thanked the voters and said that the BJP had done all in its power to defeat the Congress including distributing money, liquor and misuse of state machinery, adding that he was sure about Congress’s victory.
