Severe Cyclonic Storm Nisarga to Hit Maharashtra Today

Nisarga, the severe cyclonic storm over the East central Arabian Sea is estimated to make its landfall close to Alibag of Raigad district in Maharashtra, which is 94 kilometres south of Mumbai, on June 3. The landfall is most likely to occur early afternoon, between 1-4 PM.
The IMD bulletin issued at 10 AM today says that at the time of landfall, Nisarga will bring heavy wind with speed 100-110 km/hr with gusts of 120 km/hr. The cyclone system is closely monitored by Doppler Weather Radar at Mumbai and Goa.
At 8.30 in the morning, the cyclonic storm was located over the East central Arabian Sea and 170 km south-southwest of Mumbai, 130 km south-southwest of Alibag, both in Maharashtra and 400 km south-southwest of Surat, Gujarat.
The IMD projected that the cyclonic storm will weaken from today evening when it will become a cyclonic storm from a severe one and further weaken to a deep depression towards the night. From early morning tomorrow, it will weaken to a depression with wind speed of 40-50 km/hr with gusts upto 60 km/hr.
According to reports, strong winds and high tides have already hit Mumbai’s Versova beach. Apart from this, Ratnagiri recorded wind of 55 km/hr as of today morning while along the Konkan coast, the speed of the storm was recorded to be 75 km/hr.
Raigad, Mumbai and Thane will experience gale winds with speed of 100-110 km/hr with gusts 120 km/hr from noon today, and Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, rest of Thane will have wind with speed 85-95 km/hr with gusts 105 km/hr. While in Gujarat, Valsad, Navsari districts will experience wind with speed of 60-80 km/hr with gusts up to 90 km/hr. Dama, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Surat and Bharuch districts of Gujarat will experience wind with speed 60-70 km/hr with gusts up to 80 km/hr. All these forecasts are as per the latest IMD bulletin.
Together with heavy wind, extremely heavy rainfall is also predicted over north Konkan—Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad districts. Light to moderate rainfalls are predicted in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Low-lying areas in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts are likely to have inundation by storm surge that is likely to be 1-2 metres above astronomical tide. Along with it, Ratnagiri district’s low-lying areas can also experience heavy inundation by the storm surges.
Even before the landfall, areas in Raigad, Mumbai have seen intensified rainfall since last night.
