The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala has decided to launch two jathas (march) as part of the campaign against the BJP-led Centre’s misrule. The jathas named as Kerala Samrakshana Yatra (Kerala Protection March) will0 be commencing in the second week of February, and will converge in Thrissur on March 2.
The jathas with a slogan “Oust the BJP government; Save the country; Development, peace, social progress, Left front, People’s front,” would campaign against the anti-labour and anti-people policies of the Centre, highlighting unemployment, crisis in the agrarian sector and the damaging economic policies.

The Southern leg of the jatha will start from Thiruvananthapuram on February 14, and Northern leg of the jatha will start on February 16 from Kasargod. Southern leg jatha headed by the state secretary of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist), Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, will cover all the constituencies in Southern and central Kerala. The Northern jatha will be led by the Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary Kanam Rajendhran, and it will do rounds in the constituencies in Northern districts including Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Malappuram along with Palakkad and Thrissur.
“The jathas would tour all the constituencies and public meetings will be held in every constituency,” said A Vijayaraghavan, LDF convener, while addressing the media. There are 140 assembly constituencies in the state.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, other ministers and leaders from all the parties in the coalition front would address the public meetings and campaigns. Apart from CPI(M) and CPI, Janata Dal (Secular), Nationlist Congress Party, Congress (S), Loktantrik Janata Dal, indian National League, Janadhipatya Kerala Congress, Kerala Congress (B) etc. are the leading parties which have been the part of the ruling coalition.

The Sabarimala issue would also come up during the campaign, especially the way Sangh Parivar tried to create problems in the state, Vijayaraghavan added in the press conference. BJP and RSS have been using the Sabarimala issue as a political tool for a while. Couple of days back, Prime Minister Modi, who was in the state, attacked the state government, saying that communists are undermining India’s culture and civilisation.
The chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, however, lambasted the PM, saying that it was not the communist government, but Modi’s disciples and Sangh Parivar, who have been trying to destroy Kerala’s culture, unleashing violence. “Sangh Parivar is trying to destroy the pluralism and secular fabric of the nation,” he said.
The CM, once again, on a different occasion, slammed the PM, saying, “You’ll see that sometimes migratory birds arrive in Kerala. These days, one such migratory bird has got its eyes fixed on our land. This is making us uncomfortable. These are such migratory birds that are found only in deserts. Such birds have taken a special liking for our state. So, we are concerned what kind of danger would befall our land if this happens.”
